List of Hindi Film Songs in Jhap Taal of 10 beats

Music in India is based on two main aspects, raag (melody) and taal (rhythm). There are countless raags and many taals in Indian music.

In classifying the raags, the main basic category is that of thaat (scale). Within each thaat, there can be many raags.

Likewise, in classifying taals, the main basic category is that of number of matras (beats) in the taal. Within the number of matras, also there can be different taals.

An even more basic category, though not generally taken into consideration, is that of the base prime number of the number of matras. Thus the most basic rhythm is that of one beat, found in the most primitive (this word is not used in a demeaning sense, but in the sense of oldest and most basic) musical forms of isolated tribes who sing to a constant and unchanging pulse beat. Next, and most common, is the rhythm based on a cycle of two beats or a multiple of two (four, eight, sixteen) beats. Other rhythms found in many musical forms all over the world are based on cycles of three, five or seven beats (the next three prime numbers) or their multiples.

Indian classical music is the only form of music which used in ancient times, and knows largely in theory even today, rhythms based on cycles of beats involving other prime numbers (eleven, thirteen, seventeen, nineteen, etc.). Unfortunately, I myself do not know any songs based on any of these rhythms.

However, among the known taals commonly used in popular music, it is easy to find countless songs based on rhythmic cycles of two, three or seven beats (and their multiples), but the number of popular songs based on rhythmic cycles of five beats (or multiples) are relatively much more limited. Here, I have searched out and prepared a list of known Hindi film songs (although the first one is a popular non-film song) based on rhythmic cycles of five beats and multiples (largely the taal known as Jhap taal). I have twenty-eight songs to begin with, which I think is quite an exhaustive list. I hope someone is able to help me enlarge this list:

  3. Great work. Can you group songs on same rhythm (need not be Indian rhythms like teentaal, roopak etc. and you need not name the rhythm)? Just if you can group songs with same rhythm, it will be easy for people like me who can find that rhythm on keyboard, and play the songs one after other for a performance.
