The Two Great Patriotic Songs by Veer Savarkar Rendered by the Mangeshkars
Shrikant G. Talageri
Veer Savarkar was the greatest of the Independence-era sons of Mother India. Much has been written on him by many people, most recently and most massively by Vikram Sampath in his two volume magnum opus on Savarkar: "Savarkar: A Contested Legacy". I have also often referred to him in my articles.
But here, in this very short article, I only intend to pay my humble respects to this greatest of modern Indians by concentrating on his two great patriotic songs, sung by the Mangeshkar family (modern India's greatest musical family), which are masterpieces of patriotic Hindu sentiment, and which never fail to inspire the listener with an overpowering sense of love for India as the Motherland:
1. Ne mazasī ne.
2. Jayonstute śrī mahanmaṅgale.
The audios of the actual songs, as recorded by HMV on gramophone records can be heard on youtube (there are also other videos of live renderings by the Mangeshkars in different programs):
1. Ne mazasī ne.

2. Jayonstute śrī mahanmaṅgale.

I think it is necessary for every Hindu to hear these two songs. I also intended to give the lyrics and English translations, but both are present in the two above videos, and, though the translations given may not always be absolutely perfect, they are reasonably good enough.
For good measure, a slower version of the first song above as rendered by the great Marathi singer and music director, and great Hindu patriot, Sudhir Phadke in his film "Veer Savarkar":
